In this 13-week course, participants will learn how to help blended couples recognise the importance and work with them in discovering how existing Schemas (that inform their patterns of thinking-feeling-behaviour) can seriously impact their lives in a blended relationship. Effective counselling for blended couples allows them to examine and prepare for the unique dynamics of a blended relationship, have realistic expectations of common challenges, examine the major points of stress that pre-exist and that will be likely exacerbated by family integration. They will learn to identify the common qualities of blended families, and be able to work intervene alongside the individual strengths and resources of the individual blended family. Participants will learn how to include sibling sessions (both biological and stepsibling) as well as various combinations of adults and children (biological parent-child; stepparent-child). They will learn how to help blended partners evaluate their expectations, adapt and adjust around growth area, see themselves a collection of subsystems with varying degrees of bondedness, and reduce expectations that entire family sessions can magically bring people together.
